Okay, surely I and my friends are not the only people who have thought about this. California is going to be one of a very few number of states in the US where a gay couple can get married, AND we do not have a residency requirement. I foresee a lot of money flowing into our state, as people from all over the country come here to get married. They are going to spend money on transportation, lodging, food, and all kinds of things. Some people are going to have the wedding they've always wanted, and will be inviting friends and family members to the wedding. A lot of people are going to combine this with a vacation, and spend even more money here.

I am completely in favor of gay marriage because I support equality, but for people who don't, have you thought about the financial possibilities? Gay people's money is just as green as everyone else's!

Greetings, Beavers and friends!

Camp Beaverton is the playa's home for queer women and allies. Last year was Camp Beaverton's inaugural Burn. It was wildly successful and this year we'd like to see it grow and thrive. If you'd like to learn more about last year's burn, check out our tribe. If you'd like to participate in THIS year's burn, read on!

I'm Allison- the orange-haired Camp Counselor from last year's burn. I'll be helping organize our pre-playa planning this year, starting with our Beaver Calls. If you haven't been checking in on Tribe.net lately, now is the time to do so. We've already started some lively discussions about our presence on the playa, our intentions for this year's burn, and semantics about fundraising and shade structures. Your opinions are invaluable, so please pop on over to tribes.tribe.net/campbeaverton to get in on the action. As soon as Tribe gets with the program, I'll be taking over as moderator for the tribe. In the meantime, feel free to continue to contact last year's moderator Reid or me on the site. Or you can email me directly at this addy.

Our first organizational call will be happening on Wednesday, June 18th at 6pm Pacific Time/ 9pm Eastern Time.

You and anyone who may be interested in being involved with Camp Beaverton is invited to attend. Please RSVP on the Tribe (tribes.tribe.net/campbeaverton).

On the agenda for this call:

1. A brief history of Camp Beaverton and what we'd like to create for this year's burn
2. The role of Camp Beaverton within our parent camp of FreedomCommunity (tribes.tribe.net/freedomcommunityburns)
3. The Beaver Den and additional shade structures.
4. Fundraising
5. Events and activities.
6. Leadership positions and ways to get involved
7. Questions

This is the first in a series of calls to help manifest powerfully and playfully our queer oasis in Black Rock City this year.
Last year's burn and inaugural year for Camp Beaverton blew my panties off (if I had been wearing panties, that is). I would love to see us inspire even more playful, queer, totally rad energy this year. Please come be a part of it! And please FWD this to your friends who might be interested in what we're up to!
Looking forward to speaking with you all on the 18th...

I work as an executive (actually I work for the EVP and CEO directly. Anyway, I am "out" and have been since I started. My bosses are very old school and one is in his 60's the other in his 50's (I am in my late 30's). They are both exceptional leaders and I totally respect their work and accomplishments. One thing I noticed about working for them is that once they new I was a dyke there was like this total level of "stuff" that didn't get in the way. I have found that men either in the workplace or elsewhere once they accept the fact they don’t have a chance they kind of let their guard down a bit. I get to see more of the real them because that whole "impressing" the opposite sex thing doesn't get in the way. This is the case with my current two bosses and one of the reasons I think they like me so much. They feel much more relaxed and open to telling off color jokes and that sort of thing that I know they would NEVER say around a hetro woman. I can tell they are still not as open as might be with a guy, but for the most part we get along well. I also noticed that compared to other women in the company, they are not as afraid to really let me have it if they are angry and they give me slack when I need to blow some steam also.

In my last company I was a VP and all my supervisors (including the CEO) were women. Although we all became good friends, I knew a few of them were uncomfortable with the whole lesbian thing and that sometimes did get in the way of business.

I have found it interesting in that I would expect that working with all men would be tougher than it was with all women, but to be honest, the men are much easier for the most part.

Anyone else ever been in this situation?

We put the key in the door of our first home and crossed the threshold hand in hand. We had just come from the closing and the house was officially ours, ALL 2,200 square feet of mid-century Ranch amortized at 6.34% for the next 30 years of it. For a couple of dykes, buying a house together is the closest sort of commitment you can get to getting married. Sabrina was feeling sentimental, going through each room and dreaming out loud of what our lives were going to be like; the Virgo in me was feeling overwhelmed and anxious at the amount of unpacking we had to do just to get to our toothbrushes, towels, and dishes.

I have to confess, when I was watching her unpack, with her red and white scarf tied around her head and her favorite t-shirt with a big ole rainbow on it, I had to marvel at her beauty, both inside and out. She was so calm, so grounding for me. She’d made coming out to my family not easy, but tolerable. She made all the gross and offensive comments from men who thought they could “change me with their super dicks” bearable. She just fits me perfectly in every way. We’ve been together for four years. That’s equivalent to 16 heterosexual years for a lesbian couple and we’ve been together longer than all of our gay friends, both male and female, have ever been in a relationship combined.

I’d just about finished getting the bed frame up when I heard our doorbell ring for the first time. I ran downstairs to see who it could be and I saw Sabrina paying a delivery guy for some takeout food. She’d set up a makeshift table in the living room by taking one of our moving boxes and putting a sheet over it and she decorated it with flowers from our garden in a jar from the garage and some candles she got from who knows where. “Come and get it,” she said, as we sat down on the floor to dine on some Chinese food on the first night of the rest of our lives together.

I was overwhelmed with the feelings of love I had for this woman. “You know, I adore you, right?”

She looked at me and half-laughed. “Of course I do. And I love you too.”

“No,” I said, “I adore you. You mean the world to me. I don’t even want to think what my life would be like without you. I can’t even imagine who I would be without you.” I started to get really emotional and the words got choked up in my throat. She crawled over to my side and I put my head on her shoulder. She kissed the top of my forehead and I reached up to kiss her. Her tongue found mine and we shared an intimate kiss that grew more passionate with each passing tick of the clock. I lay back on the living room floor and she climbed on top of me, pressing her body into mine.

“Mmmm, we don’t have any curtains up yet . . . . we should . .. Stop,” I managed to say.
True to her rebellious nature, she said, “I don’t give a fuck. This is OUR house,” with heavy emphasis on the word our, and if I want to make love to my wife, and people want to watch, then so fucking be it.” With that, she slid her hand between my legs and pressed her palm against my mound. My body responded before my common sense could and I was pulling her t-shirt over her head while she was freeing me from the restrictions of my clothing.

We made love, on the floor, the very first night in our brand new home. Reclining back on an overstuffed pillow, I spread my legs and she made a dessert out of my breasts, licking and sucking my hardened nipples until I was begging her to go down on me. She kissed her way down my stomach and spread my legs. Taking her fingers, she spread the lips of my pussy and softly, gently, licked my clit until I was squirming and moaning and holding her mouth to my wet slit, wrapping my legs around her head and demanding that she let me cum in her mouth. She worked her tongue up inside me and her fingers found my asshole. I was cursing and screaming and telling her how good she made me feel and thankful we weren’t in our old, tiny one bedroom apartment with thin walls.

I turned over and got up on my knees and she alternated between driving her tongue in my pussy and my ass, causing me to reach back and spread my asscheeks wider so she could do her magic. She licked me from my clit to my spine and back again and I was grinding my pussy all over her face. She playfully slapped my ass and warned me that if I didn’t hold still that she was going to stop. Like hell she was going to stop. She wanted my cum and she wasn’t going to stop until I was flowing all over her.

She did a Bruce Lee sort of move and flipped around until her pussy was against mine. I could feel the heat of her warm cunt and the wetness of her slippery folds. She scissored her legs with mine and started bumping and grinding away, clit to clit. It was like our pussies were French kissing. I could feel the first signs of my orgasm approaching and I begged her to stop. I wanted to make love to her, to eat her, to enjoy every inch of her body first. She didn’t listen and she kept taunting me, teasing me, telling me to cum. “Give me that cum baby. Bathe me in your sweet honey. That’s it, squirt all over Mami. Oh yeah, baby, fuck me with that hard clit of yours. “

That sent me over the edge and I exploded. We curled up in each other’s arms and lay there for a while, just basking in the glow. I stroked her hair and intertwined my brown fingers with hers. She said, “We’ve christened one room, just think, we have six more to go.”

1st off I watch the show, and I am pleased that, at last there is a show about Lesbians on TV....which doesn't stereotype us....or is the L Word creating a new lesbian stereotype? Now Lesbians are glamorous, trendy, makeup wearing power dykes...so does this new image actually represent who you/we are as Lesbians/Dykes? Are younger women now "growing up" with an image of what it means to be a Lesbian...AKA...you need to be like a chick on the L Word....are you a Bette, a Shane, an Alice, a Jenny, whoever, or egads what if you are none of the women shown on the program....

And what type of attitudes will this program instill in new generations of lesbians? That it's ok to be a promiscuous player like Shane, who never once has mentioned safe sex? No... we are supposed to rack up conquest points on the "Chart"....and if we don't...what are we...losers again? So, I guess my question is do you feel that the L Word represents who you are? Or, is it just good old entertainment?

The ugly reality of "gay marriage"

My girlfriend and I are holding a “commitment ceremony”, Sept. 22, 2007, in Pennsylvania, which is a DOMA state. As far as we are concerned, we will be married, but PA law views me as a legal stranger whom my girlfriend allows to live in her house. She holds an executive level position at a global corporation that does not offer domestic partner benefits; I am self-employed.

We have engaged the services of a sympathetic lawyer to draft all sorts of documents designed to establish and protect our rights to one another’s life as much as possible. The cost is well beyond the fee for a marriage license. To add insult to injustice, the local government is demanding payment for one-half of the property taxes when we file a new deed to the house with both of our names on it. The 2007 property taxes have been paid in full but because we are not legally recognized as being related, I have to pay again, to the tune of $4,000.00! If we were married, the filing fee for the deed would be $42.50 with no further property taxes due.

Deed, wills, medical directives, living wills, home and vehicle insurances, retirement funds, the list goes on for the amount of paperwork we have to draft, re-write or otherwise review just to somewhat protect ourselves from the government or mal-intentioned relatives is just ridiculous!

The part that strikes me as funny is that none of the vendors we have retained to make our ceremony happen has even batted an eye at us being a lesbian couple. Money is money! If the checks clear, the cake will be delivered and our guests will be served, the flowers will be delivered and the venue is ours for the night. I believe in rewarding good behavior, so I have already sent thank you notes to a few of our vendors for treating us with respect and will send notes to the rest of the vendors after the event if warranted.

That’s my little story as to why it is vitally important to keep pushing for equality for all of us.

So, we have a good strong relationship, including a passionate sex life. We've lived together for about 3 years now, and are quite committed to staying together. It's a bit less exciting than it was, to be sure; in some ways that's a good thing (there are some kinds of excitement you can live better without).

She wants to know what we can do to keep the bedroom exciting. We've always talked about everything; some of it in writing or by e-mail or whatever, if it seems too hard to actually use words face to face. I can see she needs to know that. One of our friends says relationship problems come in two broad categories: money, and some variation on "what do you mean you can't read my mind?" So expecting her to read my mind (or my body) is not really fair.

Being somewhat genderqueer in addition to being in love with a like-bodied person, I have a bit of a problem. The things I like the best involve body parts that aren't really there, some of them hers, some of them mine. So describing what's going on physically (which I can do, though it's kinda clinical) doesn't really communicate what I want to say.

Suggestions? Advice? How d'you keep your lovers coming back for another handful or tongue-lashing?

I moved away from my circle of friends to live her. She is a work-centric, well paid corporate warrior with no social life. I'm, for now, a suburban lesbian housewife living in a subdivision surrounded by straight-with-children-yuppie-types. The last time we were out socially was early January, a corporate dinner, I had a tough time pulling it together to look "respectable" i.e. cover up my tattoos and tame my wild hair. ]

"Dinner is going to be with a woman I met on a business trip who lives in our area [ evil thoughts start in my head ] and her husband [ evil thoughts dissipate ] and their three year old", [ WHAT!? ] she says smiling and excited. "But we have to do it early", she adds.

Who does that? Who invites a lesbian couple, with no children, out to dinner with a three year old? Early, what 4pm? Ugh! EEEWWW - I have no desire to watch a kid drool mashed potatoes and throw a sippy cup all night. I think it's rude to subject us to a child. Get a sitter.

Am I wrong here?

Her alter ego (turns out she had 6 different personalities inside her!)? Maybe she choked on her own homophobia ... (OK, so that isn't funny). Anyhow, I've just, as I said in MY headlines, gone on a sexy clothes buying binge - kind of as a result of your topic. ANd it has been REALLY fun. I mean, for now at least, sex is kind of ... in the air most of the time. And becuas we're too busy working (we're truck drivers and we team together) to have much of a chance to act on it, there's a really wonderful tension in the air. Especially when I lean down from the top bunk in my skimpy, skimpy, skimpy see-through t-shirt that shows more than it hides to sweetly say 'honey, could you hand me my ...

Hi, just joined. The lesbian bed death thing is interesting, isn't it? I've been married to my wife for 12 years and we are still passionately, lustily, wildly in love (giggle, blush). But you know what? We very rarely actually make love. And it's much less ... long when we do. But we've been petting and caressing and deliberately love-touching a lot more lately and it is FUN. And I think maybe a really good thing. It makes us both feel more loving and more sexy with each other - not just when we're 'doin' the deed' either. And I've started looking at lesbo sex manuals too. After 12 years we've sort of gotten too ... proficient. Efficient. And, of course, there's always some new toy to try too. But I can't help thinking that ANY couple, after 12 years, would be in a similar situation. So what's the point of coining the term 'lesbian bed death'? Did it come from us or some goddessdamned Freudian pyscho? Is it just a politically motivated propagandic term to make us feel like our lust for each other can never last?????

I've been in a relationship for 5 years, and I am still head over heels in love. But we hardly ever have sex. Maybe once every month or two. Part of the reason that is bad is because I really like sex. But I think the more important issue is the loss of intimacy. There is a kind of intimacy that only sex brings and I really feel we've lost it. I'm afraid we are growing apart. The most we have talked about it is to acknowledge that the lack of sex is a problem. But I'm afraid to say more. It is always me wanting to have sex and she thinks of me as a "sex fiend," which is only partly true. Anyway, I need advice, help? Anyone else have or had this problem? Any advice on how to bring back the sex and intimacy?

Or rather these definitions are fluid and difficult to pin down. They may not even matter. But I was wondering, what is the meaning of "femme" ? Is femme only one side of a set of opposites--butch/femme? How is it independent? When I envision femme, I envision a female who almost parodies feminitity in her excess. She is costumed and painted. She might look like a greaser's girlfriend, with jet black hair, scarlet lips and 1950s style. Is femme a state of mind/being, or rather, is it an external expression of feminitiy? And how many femmes are attracted to other femmes?

I think there's a distinct lack of fashion that is geared specifically to dykes, that bypasses dresses and men's suits and finds a middle ground that is fun, swanky, growly, and comfortable. I'm beginning to develop some pieces based on my own likes and dislikes, but really would like to hear from other dykes what they feel best in when they go to an upscale party, what they hate about suits, what kind of spunk they'd like, etc etc. wanna give me feedback? i promise I'll make the dykes of the world look good...keep an eye out for me!

but my romantic associate loves christmas. she's leaving town next week to spend most of december with her family. in her mother's words, the idea of my being alone (or without family, i guess, since i wouldn't be completely alone) on december 25th is "horrid".

to make a long story short, i'm going; will be arriving in their city on december 22nd, so that we still have time to do some christmas baking together.

am i a jerk for not being stoked?
should i just be counting my blessings that i have a partner whose family is *almost* okay with her dating me?

she's excited and i'm not, and i feel bad about it.

Alberto Gonzales has a long list of people he's going to censor.

And this is why TRIBE is now censoring your civil rights....

Wave of Obscenity Prosecutions Leads to Closure and Self-Censorship of Websites

Contact:
Susan Wright, NCSF Spokesperson
(917) 848-6544

October 20, 2005
October 20, 2005 - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has announced that his office will specifically target "bestiality, urination, defecation, as well as sadistic and masochistic behavior" in pursuing new obscenity prosecutions. The Department of Justice began recruiting in late July for a new anti-obscenity squad to pursue obscenity prosecutions, and the FBI announced in September that it was forming an anti-obscenity task force to crack down on pornography.

Any website that has content containing "bestiality, urination, defecation, as well as sadistic and masochistic behavior" should be forewarned that prosecution is possible. Additionally, Federal sentencing guidelines state that any obscenity- related punishment should be "enhanced for sadomasochistic material."

Forty people and businesses have been convicted of obscenity since 2001, and 20 additional indictments are pending according to Andrew Oosterbaan, chief of the Justice Department's child exploitation and obscenity section. There were only four obscenity prosecutions during the eight years of the Clinton administration.

Though adult content is, in theory, protected by the First Amendment, only a jury can determine if a work is obscene or not under the subjective set of standards that vary from one community to the next established in the 1973 Supreme Court ruling, Miller v. California.

Text is not inherently more protected than images when it comes to obscenity charges. The erotic fiction website Red Rose Stories is facing obscenity charges after federal agents raided the owner's home on October 3rd, taking computer equipment and diskettes that contained all of their files and site information.

The Department of Justice is clearly hoping that websites will self-censor or remove their content entirely. Midori, a fetish model and SM educator who teaches classes on bondage, has removed her website, BeautyBound.com, citing fear of obscenity prosecution. The owner of three SM websites, known as GrandPa DeSade, removed his websites from the Internet. SuicideGirls.com also announced they are self-censoring their materials over concerns about a possible obscenity crackdown.

Recent prosecutions of obscenity on websites include: A former police officer in Lakeland, Florida, was arrested on October 7th on over 300 obscenity-related charges for the sexual content posted on his website. The same day, webmaster Chris Wilson, owner of amateur website NowThatsFuckedUp.com, was raided on charges of obscenity by a local Sheriff s office.

"I think it's crucial for us to stand up for consensual sadomasochism and other alternative sexual practices," says Barbara Nitke, fetish photographer. "This is a battle worth fighting, and I hope everyone who can will just censor out the most provocative material from their websites, but keep them up. I also appeal to the lawyers in our community to help us find ways to keep people's websites up."

Barbara Nitke and the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF) have proactively challenged federal obscenity laws as applied to the Internet, arguing that obscenity laws based on "local community standards" are too vague and their existence burdens protected speech, resulting in self-censorship due to the fear of prosecution. A district court three-judge panel in New York ruled that while Nitke and the NCSF members were at risk, more proof was needed that obscenity laws cause otherwise protected speech to be restrained through acts of self-censorship. The case is currently on appeal to the United States Supreme Court.

"The effect of silencing alternative lifestyle speech was exactly why we brought the lawsuit," says attorney John Wirenius, lead counsel for NCSF. "The self- censorship we are seeing underscores the importance of supporting our ongoing obscenity challenge."

NCSF is primarily focused on the rights of consenting adults in the SM-leather-fetish, swing, and polyamory communities, who often face discrimination because of their sexual expression.

My main reason for joining this tribe was to discuss riot grrl and I couldn't find a single tribe that's actually dedicated to it. :( So maybe I'll just start a topic here. What is everyone's favorite Riot Grrl record?
Mine are
-Bikini Kill's S/T record
-Bratmobile's "Pottymouth."
They're obvious picks but they have killer pop sensibilities to them while not conceding a single thing to mainstream patriarchal culture.

Basically, every day I will post a question and people can put their answer to the question in the "comments" section.

Come answer a question or two yourself, you might be surprised where it leads you....

You can visit the blog at http://bigquestion2day.blogspot.com and might add it to your list of favorites so you can check back each day for the new question.

I want to thank the women who took part in this research. The study is now complete. If you have further questions or comments you may contact me at skycladgrrl@yahoo.com.
Thank You
Tera Beaber

Here is a summary of the study’s goals and results:

Goals and Results of the Study of Sexual Experiences and Emotion in Women:
The goal of this research was to study the relationship between sexual functioning and anxiety in two groups: lesbians and heterosexual women. One interest was in investigating whether there are differences in anxiety and sexual functioning between heterosexual women and lesbians. Additionally, based on prior results, I hypothesized that anxiety is negatively correlated with sexual functioning among both heterosexual women and lesbians.
Participants were 42 women in lesbian relationships and 78 women in heterosexual relationships recruited through announcements posted on internet sites. Women over the age of 18 who were in a monogamous romantic relationship for at least 6 months were eligible to participate. The average age for lesbians was 30.05 years and the average age for heterosexuals was 28.77 years. The majority of participants were Caucasian, (76.2% of lesbians and 78.2% of heterosexuals), with smaller proportions of American Americans, Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, and Hispanics. The average length of the current relationship was 40.13 months for lesbians and 38.91 months for heterosexuals.
One of the questionnaires used in this research measured anxiety. I found that lesbians and heterosexuals reported similar levels of anxiety. Another questionnaire that I used asked for reports of sexual functioning. I found that lesbian participants reported higher levels of arousal and orgasm than heterosexual participants, but that the groups did not differ in reports of desire, lubrication, satisfaction, pain, or overall sexual functioning. Additionally, I found that the various aspects of sexual functioning correlate with one another differently for lesbians and for heterosexuals. When I analyzed the relationship between anxiety and sexual functioning, I found different results in the lesbian and heterosexual groups. Among lesbian women, anxiety was not related to any aspect of sexual functioning. However, among heterosexual participants higher anxiety was associated with higher reports of pain and lower reports of orgasm, lubrication, and overall sexual functioning. In other words, the results suggest that anxiety is negatively related to sexual functioning among heterosexuals, but that it is unrelated to sexual functioning among lesbians. Again, I want to express my thanks to the women who participated in my research. My findings were intriguing, and I am looking forward to conducting more extensive research on this topic in the future.
